Forecast Discussion

Nice powder day today for all of the open resorts in Colorado.  Breckenridge 7, Loveland 5, Arapahoe Basin 4, and Copper 4.  We will have scattered snow showers along the divide, until midmorning, then the sun will pop out in the afternoon.

The divide and 10-mile range will seem cold, with a northwest wind gusting to 25-30 mph, but on the other side of Vail pass, the winds won’t be as strong.  Temperatures will be in the low 40’s with the exception of Loveland and A-Basin in the low 30’s.

Pacific Northwest and Sierra

There will be a break between systems as the next storm hits the Pacific Northwest Sunday Afternoon.  That storm gets cut-off from the main flow and slides down the California coast, bringing more rain and upper elevation snow to the Sierra.   This was a pretty good storm that brought double digit totals back in cycles 2, 3 and 4.  Below are the comparative charts.  The storm was cut-off in 3 out of 4 cycles.

Colorado

Warm temperatures will persist in Colorado and the May 2-5th storm will be mostly rain, until the backside of the storm hits on Cinco de Mayo.

If the Long-Range Forecast Prediction Chart were to continue thru May, the dark blue dates would be on the chart.  The other shades are the storms occurred through an amplified part of the pattern.  This time of year, the pattern is lifting to the north and east, so there is no guarantee that the storms will reach Utah or Colorado, but they will be there and if they miss, they will likely miss north and east.
