Snow Stake Cams
Forecast
The storm exits today after a few more inches in the Wasatch mountains of Utah. For the northern and central mountains of Colorado the small wave continues today and exits Friday morning. When you look at the continental wide GFS below, the small wave are the small bands behind the big storm.
Cold temperatures, with negative windchill values, will prevail today as a cold air mass from Canada has been unleashed by a strong negative Arctic Oscillation (AO).
What a storm though, with national headlines throughout the week, tornados in the south, and now the system hits the northeast. This storm stretches over 1,700 miles and has left feet of snow in its path. The clear winners are Tahoe and Utah, but just about everywhere in the country has/will be affected by this storm.
Below is a quick animation of the storm, beginning just west of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, down the coast with stops in Washington, Oregon, an atmospheric river in Tahoe, a 4-day dump in Utah, and finally Colorado.
We will have a break in the action until the next system arrives in the Pacific Northwest (Storm 25) Saturday evening. This system is presently running about 12 hours early.
GFS Utah and Colorado
Not much snow with this small system, Steamboat continues to be in a great spot this year. They have had above average snowfall to date and are at 136% of average.
