Pattern Discussion
I updated the Long-Ramge Forecast Predictions chart today, and I have to admit, sometimes you are just lucky. What I thought would be a bust in Utah did manage to eek out a paltry 3 at Brighton and 2 each at Park City and Alta. The storm was weak due to a split in energy. That split caused a cut-off Low that we have been tracking for the last 6 days. I don’t feel great about the low numbers but, the way I have it set up, 2 inches is the minimum threshold for a system to count.
This present storm is churning out impressive numbers in the San Juans of Southern Colorado. Silverton has reported 16 in the last 24 hours. No report from Wolf Creek yet, but from the webcams it looks deep. Telluride has about a foot, judging from the snow stake pic in the section above.
We are coming up on the Presidents Week part of the Forecast. We have perfect MJO (Madden Jilian Oscillation) conditions, but we are getting no help from the Artic Oscillation (AO) and the NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation), so the amplification we were hoping for has been stymied, by the positive position of both the AO and NAO. Therefore, the Presidents Week storms are not that impressive. We will have to try again next cycle. I will say that the week after looks to be strong. The models are iffy that far out, but the last two cycles have had a big storm there.
I will be in Alta for that storm, the 23rd-26th. That is one of the dates that I targeted for an Alta trip this year. If you want to try our Snow Concierge Service, simply email me with your plans, or we can tell you where and when to go, using our forecasting expertise and the patent pending LRC model. We have had over 50 people reach out to us this year, which is double the number, already, from last year. Which is great because that’s why we are here. You can email anytime at Mike@FutureSnow.CO
Forecast
Colorado
Today (Snowfall Chart from yesterday)
Snow continues throughout the day today and tonight.
High temperatures will be pretty even across the board, around the upper teens to low 20’s, with the exception of the divide. For the divide, it will be super cold, with a high of around 2, and starting the day around -2. Loveland and A Basin will have moderate winds, between 15-20 with 30 mph gusts, but the wind chills will be nasty. Make sure you dress warm!
Thursday
The snow exits and temperatures will be in the mid to upper teens. Winds will calm down, but still blustery due to gusts in the mid 20’s.
Next System begins in the Pacific Northwest late Saturday night. The system will take a southwest track and hit Utah and northwest Colorado by Sunday afternoon.
